Over the years, we’ve all heard stories about the cost of legal fees, and while many people understand what they relate to, very few are able to truly quantify how they are calculated. The term ‘legal fees’ can therefore be something of a vague notion, rather than a fixed entity. Every law firm in the country imposes charges to the client, of course, and here at MML Law we’re no different, but the actual finalised price of a legal service will change greatly from one practice to another.
The reason for this disparity is due to a number of different variables, so it’s not always easy to know in advance how much you will need to pay. The best option, and it’s one that all good law firms will encourage, is to ask for an estimated price before any legal service actually takes place. It’s usually not possible to give a firm, fixed and guaranteed price because of all the twists and turns that could occur, but you will at least get a good idea of the overall charge.
The variables that are involved include the amount of time that will be spent on the case. It goes without saying that the more time taken by a legal team during the process, then the higher the financial costs will be. The ability, experience and even the reputation of your chosen legal specialist could also be a factor, as will the complexity of the case itself. And it’s worth noting that incidental costs such as communication, administration and general expenses will need to be included.
For the client, it’s all too easy to get caught up in all the legal terms and the complexities, and of course this is one of the reasons for hiring a lawyer in the first place. Initial consultations are free in some practices, but inevitably any further services can and will be charged for. Our skilled and experienced legal specialists have helped MML Law to establish an excellent reputation for client care, and one of the keystones for this is the fact that we always advise our clients to ask questions.
To find out more about fees, all you have to do is ask
Our charges, even for complex cases such as assault, homicide and theft, can become complicated, but we’re always happy to explain our pricing structure to clients as often as they wish. And at the beginning of any relationship with the client, we always do all we can to provide an estimate of the costs they will incur. If complexities arise in the course of the coming months, we’ll always explain what they are and what the repercussions are likely to be.
And it’s important for our team to understand how you will be paying for our services, so we’ll talk you through potential options such as an insurance policy, trade union membership or a legal aid arrangement. For us, this is all part of the communication process, something we see as being of the utmost importance.
