Trust is crucial to the client-lawyer relationship

There are so many qualities that you need to find in a law firm, from a sympathetic approach to a thorough knowledge of the relevant legislation, but perhaps the most important quality, the one that make the biggest difference, may be a sense of trust. If you have hired legal specialists in recent times and then decided that you didn’t trust them, you’ll realise at some point that you could have made a big mistake.

It seems a little strange to talk of something that’s difficult to quantify, of course, but without it the lawyer-client relationship is hard to maintain and probably impossible to develop. The client, especially one that’s facing a particularly serious crime such as culpable homicide or theft, is placing his or her future in the hands of that legal expert, so trust is understandably going to be a key issue.

And despite the fact that potential penalties for a relatively minor crime will be less, there’s still a need to be able to trust the law professional. The repercussions of a guilty verdict are still going to be serious, and in some cases the stigma surrounding the issue could last for several years. This could, for example, make it extremely difficult for the individual to find gainful employment.

It’s also worth noting, however, that that attainment of trust can take time to achieve, and could even be a gradual process that can need a number of months or years. The initial consultations between a member of a legal team and a potential client will often be a little tentative as they both get to know each other. It helps if the lawyer is a good listener, in order to hear the individual’s story from start to end.

And this is always a crucial stage in the relationship. The client will often be a little nervous, and may find the process rather daunting, especially to begin with. It’s never easy to speak about potentially upsetting issues, especially when you don’t know the other person well. That’s why the team at MML Law allow the client to tell his or her story at their own pace.

If a legal specialist is unable to put a new client at their ease, it could serve as a warning sign to the client that a change of lawyer might be preferable. We’ve known a number of clients over the years who have said they didn’t feel comfortable with previous law firms, and this discomfort made them more and more reluctant to talk about every detail of their own particular situation.

Here at MML Law, we’ve been determined over the years to focus on the importance of client care, and this focus has helped us to build a reputation for making first-time visitors feel at home. A sympathetic ear and an understanding manner can go a long way, especially for those who are making their initial approach to the team. We know how vital it can be to prioritise trust among our clientele.
