Oor John’s Hanging Up His Wig (Sort Of!)

Oor John’s Hanging Up His Wig (Sort Of!)

Well, folks, it’s the end of an era. Oor John Muir—one of Dundee’s best-known solicitors, a man who’s fought countless legal battles (and maybe a few rounds on the golf course)—has decided it’s time to take a step back. That’s right, after over 40 years of legal wrangling, John’s retiring from MML Law… kind of. He’s still sticking around as a consultant, just like Luka Modrić—maybe not running the full 90 minutes, but still delivering moments of pure class.

A Career Worth Shouting About

Now, if you’ve been anywhere near a Dundee courtroom in the last four decades, chances are you’ve heard of John. He co-founded Muir Myles Laverty (now MML Law) back in 1992, alongside Jim Laverty, and built it into one of the busiest firms in the city. Whether it was family law, criminal cases, or employment disputes, John was always the man you wanted in your corner. And let’s not forget his wee chat with none other than Donald Trump. He described it as “unforgettable,” which we’re taking as lawyer-speak for “you wouldn’t believe half of it if I told you.”

But it wasn’t all high-profile cases and celebrity negotiations. For John, it was always about fighting for what was right—whether that was standing up for clients in the courtroom or mentoring young lawyers who have gone on to have their own stellar careers. He’s had his fair share of victories, but if you ask him, the one that still stings was losing an equal pay claim for women at Perth & Kinross Council. “An absolute travesty,” he calls it, and you just know he means it.

What’s Next?

So, what does a retired lawyer do when he’s not poring over case files? Well, John’s got big plans—spending more time with his grandkids, working on his golf handicap (watch out, St Andrews!), and strumming a few tunes on his guitar. And, of course, he’ll still be on hand at MML Law, making sure the firm keeps up the high standards he set all those years ago.

Jim Laverty and the team at MML Law are chuffed to have him stick around, even in a reduced role. After all, when you’ve been the heart and soul of a place for over 30 years, you don’t just walk away entirely. As Jim put it, John’s honesty, decency, and sense of justice have been the foundations of the firm since day one, and they’ll continue to be the driving force going forward.

So here’s to John—Dundee’s own legal legend. Enjoy the well-earned rest, min, but don’t get too comfortable… we all know you’re not really done yet!
